Post COVID-19 World - 3

Cornucopia Writing Challenge Theme: Post COVID-19 World (150-200 words) Challenge: Use as many words as you can from the Cornucopia Club vocabulary list.  Written by Pranatpal Sharma Time traveling across the  COVID situation..  As the virus continued spreading and people, thankfully started taking some self restrictions, public places started following the suggested safety measures. The  government had to bite the bullet and stop if not all but most of the commercial activities which required physical presence and that did leave a bad effect on the country. But  it seemed that Indians were indefatigable and learned ways to continue their work through new online methods which saved our country from staying in the doldrums. While scientists were down the rabbit hole searching for a way to create a vaccine, many huge scams were exposed too including the Bollywood scam. Though this year wasn't particularly good for any one of us, many have lost lives or loved ...

Post COVID-19 World - 2

Cornucopia Writing Challenge Theme: Post COVID-19 World (150-200 words) Challenge: Use as many words as you can from the Cornucopia Club vocabulary list.  Written by Aaditya Shukla It has always been said that the only constant in Nature is change. Owing to this ineluctable principle, we too became a victim to the pestiferous lockdown because of the novel Corona virus. Staying in our homes and becoming epicures seemed to be lucrative , but again, when we do not have something, that is when we realise its value. Soon, not doing anything turned out to be a draconian punishment in itself. But, humans have this exceptional ability to circumvent even the most gruelling of problems, and so we did! These times have made us recognise and appreciate an underrated section of our society. Doctors, nurses, police personnel, ambulance drivers, teachers, etc. Their perseverance and resilience in these times has been unparalleled. While the hospitals had a deluge of patients, doctors...

Post COVID-19 World - 1

Cornucopia Writing Challenge Theme: Post COVID-19 World (150-200 words) Challenge: Use as many words as you can from the Cornucopia Club vocabulary list.  Written by Koshika Jhavar The COVID 19 pandemic has created an unprecedented situation where the world is jumping out of the frying pan and into the fire , experiencing high mortality and the economy and tourism in doldrums . At this point, a deluge of questions come to our mind. Will the world be able to show resilience or will it have long-lasting scars? How will the healthcare system circumvent the death rate? And how will our world look like? Changes are ineluctable and we shall understand and accept that every cloud has a silver lining .  The lucrative businesses will start afresh by inculcating the facility of e-commerce. Governments all around the world will stress upon improving the medical infrastructure, equipping them with impeccable technologies. The quarantine might have enervated us initially but we...

The Leaning Temple of Varanasi

Image
By Aaditya Shukla (Courtesy: wikipedia.org) Ratneshwar Mahadev Mandir (also known as Matri-rin Mahadev or Leaning Temple of Varanasi) is one of the most photographed temples in the holy city of Varanasi in Uttar Pradesh, India, near the Manikarnika Ghat. The temple is elegantly constructed in the classical style with a nagara shikhara and phamsana mandapa. The site of the temple is very unusual. Unlike all other temples in Varanasi on the coast of Ganga. The temple is built at a very low level. The temple, while apparently well-preserved, leans significantly towards the north-west, and its garbhagriha is generally below the water much of the year, except for a few months during summer. In fact, the water level can reach the shikhara of the temple. According to a popular legend, it was built by an unnamed servant of Raja Man Singh for his mother Ratna Bai about 500 years ago. After having built the temple, he proudly boasted that he had paid the debt to his mother (Matru-rin). Howe...

स्वतंत्रता दिवस

Image
Drawing by Aaditya Shukla Article by Koshika Jhavar

When The Band-Aid Gives You Cuts

Image
Written and made by Stuti Rawat Here we are, celebrating the 73 rd year of Independence. Independence day is one, that is marked as the day, after which everyone was free to live as they wanted to. But this Independence Day, I ask myself a question: Are we actually free, as we claim we are? Some might consider it to be funny, as to why I am asking this  question in the first place. I am asking this question because I am compelled to do so! On August 4, 2020, as I was reading the newspaper, I came across a news which read “Three cousins booked for raping an 8-year-old girl on Raksha Bandhan day”. Ironically, the incident occurred on the day of Raksha Bandhan, when brothers vow to protect their sisters from evil. The news disturbed me greatly, and still does so.  The girl could have never thought that people around whom she used to consider herself to be the safest, would do something like this to her. A few days back, I chanced upon another piece of news, which read, that a g...

Veganism Is Bliss - 2

Image
By Advaita Shukla (vegetarianism is cruelty free, deficiencies, stroke risk) Namaste! Dear readers, welcome to the second post in the series on Veganism. This post is going to primarily address the topics mentioned above which I have taken from the comments received on the last post. Since these topics will need quite a lot of explaining, I am aware that this post is probably going to be quite elaborate, but to try to keep it as succinct as possible I will get straight to it. Since Veganism is a philosophy primarily professing the truth about the ineffable cruelty animals are put through by the billion every single day, I would like to start by addressing the misconception that, ‘vegetarianism is cruelty free’ first. I am from a primarily vegetarian background and remember being utterly confused as a child at how some of my non-vegetarian friends at school could eat animals. I occasionally discussed this topic with my friends and asked them if they didn’t feel bad about taking someone’...

Cornucopia Club Quiz - 1

Namaste! Congratulations to all those who participated in today's Cornucopia Club Quiz. Goes without saying, this was just a fun activity and it will NOT AFFECT/INFLUENCE your school marks in any manner. 😎 The only thing that matters is that we're constantly learning and growing. Even if all my answers were wrong but I've learnt at least one new thing, then I'm definitely a winner. If I got 10/10 but I think I haven't learnt anything new, well, it was still good practice! Compete with yourself, not with the people around you! Here are the top scorers: (names are in the sequence in which their responses were received) Bhoomi and Koshika have a full 10/10. Tarang, Neel, Vinamra, Manvi and Pranav have 9/10. Divya, Atharv, Aaditya, Likhit and Ishaan scored 8/10 Thank you Advaita and Vagisha for preparing and testing the quiz. Thank you Likhit for the picture used in the banner. For those who would like to attempt the quiz (again?), CLICK HERE . It is now open to anyon...

Try New Things

By Priyansh Jain Trying new things can be very daunting for some people. Some don’t seem to appreciate the idea of stepping out of their comfort zones, and trying their hand at different activities and experiences. A few reasons might include lack of time, fear of failure, nervousness about their ability of achieving even near- perfection at it, or just not feeling that it is entertaining enough! However, the advantages of trying, or learning new things makes it worth invalidating these reasons, and channeling our energy into these tasks. I myself have attempted many things, like sketching, coding, baking, journaling, reading, meditation, yoga, digital artwork, percussion, playing the guitar, running marathons, music-making, waterfall rappelling, scuba diving, and many more. For a short while, I even tried to learn Spanish, though unsuccessfully, but still, I earned a new experience!  The present time is particularly the best, to explore new skills, and to polish the old ones... Synapse @ Vasant Valley School

By Neel Jadia 'Synapse' was an online quiz organised by Vasant Valley School, New Delhi. Many prestigious schools from across the country participated in it. The quiz was held on the 25th of July, 2020, virtually, on the Zoom platform, wherein, the students of Class X took up a preliminary round a day before, starting 4 p.m. For prelims, one had to qualify 5 levels to participate in the final quiz. For the prelims preparation, all my science teachers gave their valuable time to me, and took many efforts to prepare me for the quiz. I would like to thank all my teachers for this. For the prelims conducted using Google Forms, we had to answer as many MCQ’s as we could, within 20 minutes. The questions varied in their difficulty, and there was negative marking for each wrong answer, and one correct point for each correct answer. Some questions were as basic as giving the formula for washing soda, while some were from Class XII, like combination of concave and convex lenses and do...

Why Phraseology and (Positive) Psychology Should Concur

By Atharv Rangole Let me tell you a story emphasizing upon the necessary instigation of the conventional habitude of affixing oneself to moral grounds, and yet the long-lost practice of not floccinaucinihilipilificating the commonly deprecated masses. The story also focuses its light on the power of having an equitable mindset, along with the indispensable usage of felicitous vocabulary...   “Twenty years ago, I, along with my dad, was waiting for the night bus to come, so that we could finally head home. Dad used to work the afternoon and evening shifts at the Berryman Café, and I used to pack his lunch and take it to him every day after school. We used to spend the evenings together, and would leave for home at eight each night, either by walking, or, if I got lucky, sometimes by the bus.  The pouring rain had been engulfed by the darkness, and I was feeling quite warm, huddled in dad’s oversized coat, standing in the sheltered bus station. On the opposite paveme...

The Shakti Processor

Tech Feeds by Pranatpal Sharma                                                        Processer Shakti Hello friends! In this series, I will talk about popular technology news from around the world and some great contributions in the tech world made by India. I am sure most of you already know what a processor is but still here’s a little insight into it: A processor as you know is the processing unit of the PC which collects data, converts it into binary data, reads it, apprehends it and gives the output.   The processor in the picture is an Intel Celeron which is a very old processor that I had lying with me. The processor we see is actually just the lid and the pins. Inside the lid is the die which is the main processing unit which contains CORES AND THREADS. Now what are these Cores and Threads? Well, to put it simply, cores are t...

Remember

Image
Drawing by Tarang Jain Remember  by Christina Georgina Rossetti (1830-1894) Remember me when I am gone away, Gone far away into the silent land; When you can no more hold me by the hand, Nor I half turn to go yet turning stay. Remember me when no more, day by day, You tell me of our future that you plann’d: Only remember me; you understand It will be late to counsel then or pray. Yet if you should forget me for a while And afterwards remember, do not grieve: For if the darkness and corruption leave A vestige of the thoughts that once I had, Better by far you should forget and smile Than that you should remember and be sad.

The Midnight Visitor

Image
By Pranatpal Sharma This story written by Robert Arthur is about a secret agent named Ausable. He was with a writer named Fowler who was there to experience the thrills in the life of a secret agent. Fowler soon realized that Ausable was exactly the opposite of what he had imagined secret agents were like. Ausable told Fowler that he need not be disappointed and very soon he would be looking at a very important report which could change the country’s future. When they returned to Ausable’s room, they found another agent named Max standing with a gun pointed at them. He asked them to be comfortable until the reports related to missiles arrived. Sketch made by Pranatpal's mother (Thank you ma'am) This was really an adventurous experience for Fowler while meeting a secret agent. Meanwhile, Ausable started weaving a story about a hypothetical balcony outside the window of his room. While this talk was going on, someone knocked at the door. Ausable said that the poli...
