The extract that we have in our textbook from Nelson Mandela's autobiography is not only about the reminiscence of the Apartheid system in South Africa but also Mandela’s outlook on democracy, liberty, freedom, prosperity and equality. As Nelson Mandela took his pledge as the first black President of South Africa, he expressed his feeling regarding political emancipation and also his gratitude for the global support.
Further, the extract forces us, the readers, to rethink and redefine our understanding of freedom and obligations towards society. Both the oppressor and the oppressed need to be liberated. We need to strive to make this world a better place to live in, for everyone, irrespective of their race, caste, gender, nationality or religion.
